Wellmet was begun in 1960 as a classroom project by students at Harvard University. Appalled by the conditions at State Hospitals of the time, they struck upon an idealistic approach to helping people with psychiatric disabilities. Elegant in its simplicity, a home was opened and staff lived side by side with residents. Patients, formerly given little opportunity to take on any responsibility and treated with little respect, were introduced to a community where they were expected to prepare meals, do household chores, and take an active role in the governance and activities of the home. The close proximity of a dedicated and caring staff did much to destigmatize mental illness and counter the effects of institutionalization. Over the 50 years of our operations, thousands of people have been served and benefited from our care. Those original founding principles remain in effect today, making Wellmet both unique and long-standing.
